When the City Wakes at Midnight: Urban Notes on the Geography of Nightlife

Nightlife is not just lights and consumption; it is the visible manifestation of a city’s moods. A 2023 study in the academic journal *Humanities and Social Sciences Communications*, using four bar streets in Guangzhou as samples, proposed that the nightlife landscape is shaped by the intertwining forces of “romanticization” and “commercialization,” forming four types of urban nights with strikingly different temperaments. Starting from the experience of these neighborhoods, this article reconsiders the relationship between people and the city after nightfall.
